Over 2,000 members of a quiet beachside community in Queensland have gathered for a vigil to remember a much-loved local girl.

17-year-old Charlize Zmuda was fatally attacked by a shark while swimming off Woorim Beach on Bribie Island, north of Brisbane, on Monday, February 3rd.

The attack occurred around 4:45 PM local time, approximately 100 meters offshore at Woorim Beach, a popular surfing and swimming spot. Emergency services responded quickly, but despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after.

Her father, Steve Zmuda, spoke emotionally to the Press, describing Charlie's love for the beach, “She was a dedicated lifesaver who wanted to only do the best for our club and for all the people in our community'.

She was also passionate about the environment, often picking up rubbish during beach outings. Despite their grief, Charlize's parents urged the public not to stop visiting the beach, emphasising that she would not have wanted her death to deter others from enjoying the place she loved. They asked the community to focus on her incredible life rather than the tragic way she died.

While the exact species of shark involved has not been officially confirmed, experts have suggested it was likely a bull shark, given their prevalence in the area and the nature of the attack.

This marks the third fatal shark attack in Australia within a six-week period, following incidents in South Australia and Queensland.
